halloween blog

The guy in the video that we watched today had a very funny Swedish accent. He taught us about the growth of different nations over 400 years. H teaches global health and is working on animating data. He showed us a chart,  at the bottom of the chart was people that were poor and sick with a low life expectancy. At the top of the chart was people that were rich and healthy. Most of the developing countries are in the bottom of the chart. In 1810 the life expectancy was below 40. The UK was the first group of people to be able to produce products in a mass quantity.

population pyramids

~ Russia and Nigeria have about the same population even though Russia is much bigger ~ Nigeria's population is growing and Russia's population is falling ~ on population pyramid, men are on the left women are on the left ~ youngest at the bottom/oldest on top ~ data is recorded in 5 year increments 3 different groups: 1. pre-productive age (0-14) 2. reproductive age (15-44) 3. post reproductive age (45-death)

reviewed test

Today in class, we went over the test. I did worse than I thought. I got a 89%. I was hoping that I would do better so that it would bring up my grade before the end of the quarter. My grade is a 88.54%. The part of the test that made my grade go down the most was the vocab section. I don't know why I got all of the words confused. I got confused net migration rate and rate of natural increase. I also got GPD per capita wrong. The other question that I got wrong was the question that asked whose net migration rate is highest. I put Mexico and the answer was Canada. I also got one the bonus questions right.

test day

Today in class we had a test. I didn't study very much last night because of the amount of other homework that I had but I studied in my off mod and during advisory. I think that the test was pretty easy even though I didn't study very much. The one thing that got me stuck was the push and pull forces. I put four different countries that I knew were good examples but I couldn't remember examples of push and pull forces. I don't think that this will bring my grade down by much but I don't think that I got a 100%. I need this grade to be good because I have a 88.39% in this class and I want to bring it up to an A before the quarter ends next week. I don't know if I will be able to do this but I have been doing my blogs every night so that I know I get a 100% on all of those assignments. These blogs are easy points and might bring my grade up to an A but if it doesn't I will only have two B's and the rest of my grades are A's.

test tomorrow

Today in class we reviewed for our test tomorrow. This test is on everything that we have learned about population and settlement. We have been working on this for a while so I think that the test might be a lot but I don't think that it will be that hard. Some things that will be on a test will be population of the world right now, where the population is growing throughout the world, the vocabulary that we have been learning, the years that we hit billions and the years elapsed between, life expectancy, math to find the rate of natural increase, two push and two pull forces with examples of countries and the reasons for the push and pull force. I have made a quizlet for this test so that it will be able to study. I already put the years that we hit billion, vocabulary, and push and pull forces. This means that I need to add examples of countries with push and pull forces, the population of the world right now, where the population is growing, the years elapsed between the yea

review day

today in class we reviewed all of the questions that we answered in our last blog from the CIA fact book. some of the answers were really surprising and made me think about how good our economy is. almost 1/4 of the population doesn't have access to electricity. also there are may children that don't make it past the age of one because of drug addiction. we also have a test on Friday that will cover everything that we have learned for the past two weeks. I know that I will have to study for this because I know that there will be a lot of numbers and I have trouble remembering numbers. I can make a quizlet to help me study.

CIA World Fact Book Questions

1. The population of India is 1,296,042. The population of China is 1,384,688,986. 2. The total fertility rate in Japan is 1.42 children per woman. 3. The death rate in El Salvador is 5.8 deaths per 1,000 people. 4. The percent that identifies as none as their religion in France is 23-28%. This is not verifiable because they don't check religions anymore. 5. The percentage of Mexicans that identify themselves as Roman Catholic is 82.7%. 6. The GPD in the United States is $59,800 per capita. 7. The GPD in Nigeria is $5,900 per capita. 8. The GPD in Luxembourg is $105,100 per capita. 9. The percentage of the United States that are internet users are 76.2%. 10. There are 1,218 airports in Russia. There are 13,513 airports in the United States. 11. 1.201 billion people in the world don't have electricity. 12. The infant morality rate in Canada is 4.5 per 1,000 live births. The infant morality rate in the United States is 5.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. The i

Why do people migrate?

push forces: ~ civil war ~ environmental deflation ~ unemployment/underemployment ~ religious or ethnic persecution pull forces: ~ better economic opportunity ~ better health services ~ religious freedom ~ political freedom total fertility rate (tfr) ~ average number of children born per woman ~ to remain the same, tfr must be 2.1 ~ higher than 2.1 = population rises ~ lower than 2.1 = population falls world tfr ~ 2.42 Nigeria tfr ~ 6.89 Japan tfr ~ 1.40

Births and Deaths

crude birth rate ~ number of births per 1000 of the population crude death rate ~ number of deaths per 1000 of the population rate of natural increase (RNI )~ produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate this gives us the annual natural growth rate in percentage form for a country or region net migration rate ~ the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during  year net immigration ~ an excess of persons entering the country ~ written as a positive number net emigration ~ excess of people leaving the country ~written as a negative number

test review

Today in class we went over our test that we took on Monday. I got a 70 percent. Our average score as a class was a 75 percent. Even though we got to use our notes, the honors classes got a higher average than our class. On the test, the section that I got the most wrong was identifying absolute location and relative location. I only got two right on these questions. Mr. Schick told us to write the answers to all of the answers on the side of the paper. This gives us a good way to study for the final that is later in the year.

population and settlement

Today for the first half of class, the people who had to leave early took the test. The people who already took the tests got their scores back. I got a 70 percent. This is worse than I thought but I just passed so I guess I did okay. We started a new lesson on population and settlement. We looked through a powerpoint while we were waiting for people to finish the test. There are over 7.6 billion people on the Earth right now. This is being increased by 73 million people per year, 200,000 people per day, 8377 people per hour, 149 per minute, and 2.5 per second. 90% of the world's population growth takes place in developing countries. I also took notes on some of the slides we didn't get to yet. Crude birth rate is the number of births per 1000 of the population. Crude death rate is the number of deaths per 1000 of the population. The rate of natural increase or RNI is produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate. This gives us the annual natural growth rate fo

maps test

Today we had a test on maps, latitude, longitude, site, situation and time zones. I made a quizlet and studied a lot so I think I did pretty well. I know that I got a few questions wrong because when I was taking the test I had no idea what the answer was so I took my best guess and am hoping for the best. There was one question that I remember that I think that I got wrong. It was about what Eastern Standard Time was in the United States with UTC. I did not know that answer so I put UTC +5. I hope this is correct. There were a few other questions that I guessed on but for most of the questions I knew exactly what the answers were and how to answer them! I think that I will probably get a 22/27. I didn't really need to use my blog but when I did use it for the questions I didn't know, I didn't have the answers in my blog. I thought that it was really nice of Mr. Schick to let us use our blogs to help us during the test. Using the blog taught me that I need to write more o

Pop Quiz Day

Today in class we had a pop quiz. I got a 4/10. This made me feel stupid. I definitely need to study for the test. I hope I don't fail the test on Monday. I am going to be studying all weekend and then maybe I will know everything in the lesson. This section is confusing for me because I don't understand a lot about maps or their purpose. We also reviewed for the test before the pop quiz. I didn't know that I didn't understand a lot of stuff that was going to be on the test. This is very stressful for me bc I don't really know how I am going to learn it all in one weekend but I guess I am going to have to try my best.

Time Zones

Today in class we learned about time zones. A time zone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial and social purposes. They tend to border around countries because it makes it easier for commercial purposes. Each time zone is 15 degrees. UTC or Coordinated Universal Time is the primary time by which the wold regulates clocks and time. GMT or Greenwich Mean Time is often used as a synonym for UTC. GMT is from about 300 years before UTC. Daylight Savings Time is when we adjust the clocks an hour forward. It starts on November 3 at 2 am. Some people want to abolish daylight savings time because the use for it is no longer around.
