Today in class we learned some new words that relate to the ancient Greeks.
agora~ is a public open space used for assemblies and markets.
polis~ is a city state in Ancient Greece, especially as considered in its ideal form for philosophical purposes.
importance of the year 508 BC~ In 508 BC democracy is introduced in Athens. It was the first time in history that regular people rose up against their leaders and overthrew them.
Socrates~ was a Classical Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, and as being the first moral philosopher of the Western ethical tradition of thought.
Socrates death~ Socrates was poisoned in 399 BC. He was accused of "refusing to recognize the gods recognized by the state" and of "corrupting the youth".
the Socratic method~ a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and draw out ideas and underlying presumptions.
what the Greeks meant when they called you an idiot~ you were self centered and didn't care about Greece, only your own business and responsibilities.
